“Did it help?” — Kelford Labs Daily
If it didn’t, don’t do it.

You know I’m in a snarky mood when you hear me ask, “Did it help?”
Here’s how it usually happens:
Someone, perhaps a friend or a colleague, recounts the agony of following the standard marketing advice:
“So I sent out 100 outreach emails...”
Or:
“So I’ve been DMing every new connection on LinkedIn...”
Or:
“So I bought that new course everyone’s talking about...”
And I ask:
“Did it help?”
Because of course it wouldn’t. The standard, best practice marketing advice doesn’t work. Of course it doesn’t!
Marketing is about standing out, not blending in. So if you’re following the same advice, the same standard workflow and template and course that everyone else is, you’re painting yourself in business camouflage.
That’s why it isn’t working, that’s why you’re frustrated: You’re following the crowd, and they’re lost.
Instead, you’ve got to demonstrate your unique value at a distance, by doing what only you can do, in your own unique way, consistently and coherently.
So the next time you find yourself agonizing over a marketing trend, best practice, or sense of obligation, ask: “Did it help?”
If it didn’t, don’t do it anymore. And find something unique that does.
