Does your strategy actually have a strategy? — Kelford Labs Daily
Or is it a wish?
How do you know if you have a strategy and not just a wishlist of tactics?
How do you know if you have a strategy and not just a set of goals or objectives?
How do you know if you have a strategy and not just a plan of action?
Well, remember, we define “strategy” as:
The structure to work efficiently to get what you want.
Seen this way, you don’t yet have a strategy until you have:
- Identified what you want, and how you’ll know you’ve gotten there
- Articulated a set of efficient actions that will move you closer to what you want
- Defined a structure of controls and accountability that will ensure those actions are taken, measured, and iterated upon over time
Absent all these components, you may only have goals, or you may only have tactics, or you may only have an intent.
Combined, though, these form an actionable set of instructions for behaviour within your organization that will move you closer to your goals.
That’s what makes it a strategy, and not just a wish.
