Talking about what you want to talk about — Kelford Labs Daily

want to talk about what you want to talk about.

That’s why I love (and am pretty good at) interviewing people.

When you figure out what the subject wants to talk about, you get them to reveal information, to be candid, to be engaged with the conversation because they’re having a good time.

That’s what makes it fun and fascinating for the audience.

And the same thing applies to writing content on behalf of other communicators, and helping them get better at writing it themselves:

I figure out what you want to talk about.

I ask questions, notice where you’re excited or bored, and follow the most interesting threads.

That’s what makes content enjoyable to read: When you get the sense that the writer enjoyed it, too.

You can’t fake it, or simply copy what someone else is doing. That’s not sincere, which means it’s not sustainable. Better to be the prototype for something new, something special, something you.

So here’s how to think about making your marketing content:

Figure out what you want to talk about. Don’t try to copy someone else.

That’s like interviewing someone by asking all the same questions they’ve already answered before. They’ll be bored, and so will the audience.

But if you talk to me about your content, I’ll help you find what you like.

So you can say something that you want to talk about, and enjoy it.

And the people you’re talking to can enjoy it, too.
