Can marketing make you better? — Kelford Labs Daily

My fundamental belief about marketing is that it is best thought of as “Demonstrating value at a distance.”

Not as “persuasion.” Not as “convincing.”

But as demonstrating real value that you’ve really created and can really deliver.

Can you spend enough money on advertising to persuade or convince someone that a bad product is actually a good one? For sure, at least for a short time.

Is that the best course of action, though? Of course not.

Better to demonstrate real value than advertise a falsehood.

Which means marketing is about creating a virtuous cycle between what you say and what you do.

What you say and how your prospects respond gives you clues to what you should be focusing on in your work.

And what you focus on in your work gives you material and content for what you say.

Around and around until you get better and better at doing one thing in particular. And better and better at demonstrating that one thing’s value.

That’s how great marketing can increase our value, instead of just costing us money.

Because it makes us better, not just at what we say, but at what we do.
