Marketing or messaging? — Kelford Labs Daily
What you say, not just what you do.

When we think about marketing, we often think about the stuff.
Advertisements. Websites. Social media posts.
We think about the tactics, the physical and financial outputs.
And it’s easy to forget about the messaging. As in, the content of those ads, that website, those social media posts.
We can find ourselves thinking that the answer to our marketing challenges is to do more.
When the actual answer might simply be to say things differently.
The act of advertising might not be the thing to focus on. Building a new website might not be helpful.
Creating more social media posts might not move the needle.
Instead, it’s possible that we simply need to improve our messages on our existing channels, or even focus our messages on fewer channels than we’re currently trying to manage.
When we don’t understand what someone’s saying, it rarely helps if they just say it louder. Usually, we need to them say it in a different way.
To show us by analogy. Or to demonstrate it to us in a way we can visualize and experience.
So if your marketing isn’t doing what you want it to do, ask yourself this:
“Am I confident I’m saying the right thing?”
If not, start there. And grow into new channels and new tactics once you’re certain your messaging is correct.
Instead of spinning around in circles trying something new every day, or simply raising your voice and hoping people will understand.
