Getting through the long middle.
Ever notice how you have energy at the beginning of a project, and again right at the end?
It’s that “long middle,” as behavioral scientists call it, that really kills our motivation.
When you’re halfway through a blogging experiment that you thought would be easy but turned out to be a pain.
When you’re halfway through a day standing at a tradeshow booth and wondering if you can sneak away without anyone noticing.
When you’re right in the middle of an outreach campaign and you’ve started telling yourself you’ve done enough already.
When you’re slogging through another batch of social posts and you don’t even understand words anymore.
So, what’s the secret to getting through the long middle? How can you have more energy and enthusiasm to push through to the real end?
You turn the middle into a new beginning.
Celebrate that you’re halfway, take a break, and consider how you want to approach the second half based on what you learned.
Schedule a coffee appointment with a friend, colleague, or new acquaintance and tell them about how your project is going, and how you want to tackle the next section.
Pat yourself on the back, awkward as it may feel and look, because you earned it.
There are many things you can do to shorten or eliminate the long middle. The important thing is that you do.
Otherwise, you’re turning your marketing into an unnecessary burden. You’re playing the game on Hard Mode when you don’t have to.
You don’t get extra marketing points for suffering.
So shorten the middle by making it a new beginning.
What are you in the middle of, right now—today—and how can you turn it into a new beginning?
