Suddenly takes time — Kelford Labs Daily

What do all “overnight successes” seem to have in common?

A story about how their success was anything but overnight.

As Hugh Macleod wrote, “Nobody suddenly discovers anything. Things are made slowly and in pain.”

Which means we can’t expect our first efforts, like our first bit of marketing, or our first piece of content, or our first advertising campaign, to be the big one. The one that sends us into the stratosphere, putting all of our problems behind us.

That’s just not how success works.

No, success “fades into view,” through constant, consistent effort, at a pace we can maintain.

But don’t fret, this is good news. Because it means we’ll never have to bet everything on one attempt, and lose it all.

We’ll never have to invest every dollar, every minute, or every ounce of energy into a single campaign or piece of content.

It means we’ll be able to keep working, keep learning, and keep moving ahead for the long haul.

When we’re “discovered” by the market, it will be because we built a track record of quality and credibility.

Slowly by slowly,” we’ll build a reputation and gain attention.

That’s how we’ll become “overnight successes.”

By not trying to.
