What do you do? — Kelford Labs Daily
What do you say?
“What do you do?”
What do you say when someone asks that?
Do you tell them you’re a business owner? An entrepreneur? A founder? A marketer?
When you tell them, do they ask any follow-up questions?
It’s easy to forget that every time we talk about our business, we’re marketing it. We’re demonstrating our value at a distance.
And when we say that we’re a business owner, or we simply name the company we operate, people rarely have many more questions to ask—because we haven’t demonstrated any value.
When we say who we are—an entrepreneur, for instance—we’re forgetting to talk about what we actually do.
Remember: Your process is your position. So the next time someone asks you, “What do you do?” don’t tell them who you are as a title.
Tell them what you do as a process.
When people ask me what I do, I can say, “I work with entrepreneurs and founders to identify their unique source of value for their very best customers, and then I craft marketing messages that demonstrate that value at a distance.”
When I say that, people tend to have more questions: “What kinds of businesses do you work with? How did you get into that? Who are some of your clients?”
If you want people to know what you do, you need to tell them.
And if you’re struggling to answer, tell them how you do what you do.
Because how you do what you do is what you do.
Kelford Inc. provides finely crafted value propositions and marketing messages for hands-on entrepreneurs and founders.
We’ll show you the way to always knowing what to say.
