Who are you talking to??? — Kelford Labs Daily
A real person, not a persona.
My favorite moment in The Truman Show is when Laura Linney’s character suddenly starts promoting a product in the middle of an intense conversation.
Truman, unaware that he’s not the audience for the promotion, bursts out with:
“What are you talking about? Who are you talking to?!”
Anyway, I ask myself that same question a lot when I see ads or scroll through LinkedIn.
So many promotions feel like they’re not actually for anyone. They were a to-do on someone’s list, not an actual piece of creative work meant to help someone make a buying decision.
They feel inserted into conversations where they don’t belong, like promoting cocoa while Truman’s having a breakdown.
So let’s do this:
Go to your latest LinkedIn post, or take a look at your homepage copy. Ask yourself:
Who am I talking to?
And if you don’t immediately picture a real individual—a real person, not a persona—it’s time for a rewrite.
Just imagine Truman staring back at you, wide-eyed and world-weary, demanding:
“What are you talking about? Who are you talking to?!”
And make sure you have a good answer.
