Marketing when it’s easier not to — Kelford Labs Daily

Every few months, I send my weekly newsletter subscribers (that’s you!) an issue of Kelford Labs Daily, and that’s what I’m doing today.

If you’d like to receive these short bits of marketing inspiration each weekday, you can add it to your subscription here or just reply to this email and I’ll add it for you.

As summer ramps up, we’ve found ourselves in the midst of a busy season.

And, like all entrepreneurs, when we get busy we tend to think about our marketing less.

But we’re marketers! So it’s not a good look for us to let our marketing slide, even if we think we have a good excuse.

So I figured I’d let you know how we’re making sure we’re keeping up with our sales and marketing even while we’re busy with other work.

1) Ask for help

The first thing we’ve done is start working with a sales coach. We jokingly refer to him as our “accountabilibully”. We don’t need reminders or a just a plan, we need someone to make sure we’re actually doing the things we said we would. He’s making sure we’re keeping our commitments to ourselves, not just to our current clients.

Even marketers need help making sure they’re marketing. It’s okay if you do, too.

2) Make it a habit

The next thing we’ve done is focus on our habits. It would be easy, in some ways, to let this newsletter slip. To skip a few days or weeks and tell myself I’ll get back to it when things slow down. But we both know I wouldn’t. By making this a habit, though, and keeping an unbroken streak, I’m more likely to stick with it than if I gave myself the freedom to stop or pause. That’s how marketing fails, after all.

If you make your marketing a habit, you’ll want to do it even when you have other things to do.

3) Make it fun

Lastly, we’re not worried about getting it perfect. We’re worried about getting it done at all. So we’re making it fun, we’re making it intentionally joyful, and we’re keeping the stakes as low as they can be kept. The important thing is that we keep going, so we’re having fun on LinkedIn, I’m having fun with this newsletter, and we’re reaching out to partners and prospects we have fun talking to, instead of trying to force things that feel bad.

Pursuing perfection leads to frustration, but pursuing fun leads to action.

For us, this happens to be a busy season, but seasons change. And if things slow down, we want to make sure our marketing hasn’t.

So that it’s there for us when we need it most.

By doing it even when we don’t “need” to.
